Argentine appeared to lambast club’s hierarchy in social media outburst
Thomas Frank has confirmed that Cristian Romero will remain Tottenham captain and will not be fined following his social media outburst after Spurs’ 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth.
Romero took aim at senior figures at the club in an explosive post on Instagram on Thursday.
The 27-year-old said “other people” at the club should come out to speak and claimed they “only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies”.
Romero then edited the post to remove the accusation of “lies”.
Frank and sporting director Johan Lange spoke to Romero about the post on Thursday and decided not to fine the defender or strip him of the captaincy.
“He is our captain, he’s not been fined,” Frank said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham’s FA Cup tie with Aston Villa.
“We handled it. Johan and I spoke together. Johan and I had a conversation with Cuti. Done.”
Asked why Romero had not been fined, Frank said it was an internal matter, and the conversation had been productive in establishing why he had taken to social media to express his frustrations with senior figures at the club.
“I think there are a lot of ways to deal with different situations. We’ve chose to have a good conversation with him, understand where he stands, handle it internally, and that’s everything I have to say.”
Frank’s decision not to fine Romero for his behaviour appears to have set a precedent for the rest of the squad.
However, when asked if there could come a point where he draws a line, the Dane said he was not afraid to dish out punishments and referenced the fact that he dropped Yves Bissouma from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup in August for persistent lateness.
“Yes, of course [there is a line to be drawn]. I’ve done that before with people being late, there was the Bissouma situation. You talk about having to draw a line. I think if it’s the exact, same situation that they do.
“You can make a mistake, don't make the same mistake twice. So I think I understand why you mention some players, but it’s all different situations and different players.
“We’re working very hard on being a cool, calm, but still passionate unit that can compete every game. That will go a little bit up and a little bit down.”
