FC Bayern have conceded several goals from set-pieces this season, but coach Vincent Kompany sees progress – and points to another of his team’s strengths
FC Bayern are working hard to improve their weaknesses in set-pieces, as coach Vincent Kompany commented at the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga match against Borussia Mönchengladbach
In recent weeks, Munich’s susceptibility to set-pieces has been a topic of discussion on several occasions, with former international Toni Kroos among those who recently pointed out that set-pieces could be a potential weakness for Munich– especially in view of the crucial matches in the Champions League
Kompany has now made it clear that the team is aware of this problem and is working on it: „It’s a fact that we’re not perfect. We’re trying to work every day to become a better version of FC Bayern. We had a phase in which we talked about it almost every day, when we scored most of our goals from set pieces,“ said the coach
According to the coach, however, his team is already on the right track and it is particularly important not only to improve their defensive organization, but also to use their own strength in attacking set-pieces: „We are on the right track. And there is one more figure: we are one of the best teams in Europe in terms of how we attack with set-pieces.“
FC Bayern are indeed one of the most dangerous teams in Europe this season when it comes to their own set-pieces, but at the same time they have also recently shown an increased vulnerability in defense

In the 3:2 win in the Bundesliga classic against Borussia Dortmund, for example, Munich once again conceded a goal from a dead ball. Overall, a strikingly large proportion of the goals conceded came from set pieces
This can be a decisive factor, especially in the knockout phase of the Champions League. In close matches at the highest level, details are often decisive – and standards have long been one of the most important weapons in modern top-flight soccer.
