Sheffield United have completed the signing of Japhet Tanganga from Millwall, securing one of the Sky Bet Championship’s most highly regarded defenders in a deal reportedly worth north of £5 million.
The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract at Bramall Lane, becoming the Blades’ third defensive recruit in recent days.

Speaking to SUTV after sealing the move, Tanganga expressed his excitement about joining the club:
“Sheffield United is a big club with a lot of history. I am just excited to be here, and I can’t wait to get started. The club was so close last season, it’s a great group of players. Sometimes in your career you have to make certain decisions, and I think this one is the right one for me.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur defender also paid tribute to Millwall for giving him the platform to reignite his career following his departure from Spurs, while also underlining his hopes of continuing that momentum in South Yorkshire.
“After leaving Spurs it was important that I went somewhere where I had that platform to play week in, week out. Millwall gave me that, and that’s all I wanted to do. I just want to continue that up here now at Sheffield United.”
Tanganga’s versatility and defensive qualities are expected to make him a vital addition to the Blades’ backline. Renowned for his strength in one-vs-one duels, the defender is comfortable operating both in a traditional back four and as part of a back three.
His arrival follows the loan capture of Ben Godfrey from Atalanta and the permanent signing of Swedish centre-back Nils Zatterström from Malmo. Yet, many inside Bramall Lane view Tanganga as the headline acquisition of the trio, a defender entering his prime, with both Championship pedigree and Premier League experience under his belt.
The Blades fans could see Tanganga make his debut at Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon, as could Nils Zatterstrom and the recent forward signing Danny Ings.
