Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou has addressed speculation linking him with the Celtic vacancy in the summer. The Dane has been a revelation since arriving at Fir Park in the summer, taking Motherwell to Fourth, playing some incredible football this campaign with some touting the Steelmen as outsiders for the league title.

The performances from Askou’s team have captured plaudits and the 43-year-old has emerged as a candidate for a number of jobs as a result. Aberdeen are believed to have been keen on the ex-IFK Gothenburg manager; however, Motherwell have continued to impress and now, he is being linked with a switch to Celtic in the summer.

As reported by Sun Sport, Askou directly addressed the Celtic links and said that he cannot stop speculation and said that his aim is to finish the season strongly.

“I don’t know if it’s disrespectful, but I don’t think it is anything you can avoid.

“It’s not something I need to comment on or anything because it’s something that we cannot stop.

“There is a little bit of noise and speculation about stuff, but the good thing is that I’m here, I’m really pleased with that.

“Celtic have a job to do as well. That’s why I don’t feel any need to comment on these things.

“Everyone needs their peace and quiet to finish the season strongly.”

Celtic will replace Martin O’Neill at the end of the season and Askou is favourite, ahead of Roberto Martinez. A number of managers will be interested in the vacancy, recognising the enormous opportunity and relishing the chance to achieve harmony at Celtic Park once again.

The attacking play that Askou has introduced has been extremely easy on the eye; however, the real testament to the Dane is that he has taken an average Premiership side on a budget and turned some of the senior pros into key components of his squad. Stephen O’Donnell is a great example of this, largely written off given his age, he was brilliant for the Well in their win over St Mirren.
