With Alejandro Balde out due to a recent injury, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is most likely to bet on 23-year-old Gerard Martin to fill the gap at left-back—and looking at his numbers, it is safe to say that the defender has not disappointed.
Barcelona are heading into a crucial phase of the season, which includes the much-anticipated Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, and Martin’s emergence as a reliable option could not have come at a better time.
As a result of recent turn of events, it is obvious that Martin has a golden opportunity to make a strong impact and considering the importance of the matches, Flick may view him not just as a backup but as an asset.
Interestingly, the player has steadily grown into his role this season, and the results certainly speak for themselves.
It must be noted that Martin has made 10 starts for Barcelona—two in the Champions League, six in La Liga, and two in the Copa del Rey.
Quite impressively, Barcelona have won eight of those games, drawn one, and lost only once.
For what it is worth, his contributions have not been limited to just defending. In fact, he has scored a goal and has also provided three assists during the campaign.
Barcelona have complete faith in Martin, and this can be understood by the fact that earlier this year, the club renewed his contract until 2028.
Now, with Balde out and big games on the horizon, including the Champions League showdown against Borussia Dortmund, Martin’s moment has truly arrived.
If he can continue his form and prove his worth to Flick, he may just turn a temporary opportunity into a fighting chance of making the spot his own.
