Burkinabé defender Steeve Yago voiced his deep frustration after Nigeria secured a spot in the continental playoffs for the 2026 World Cup, edging out Burkina Faso.On his Instagram account, Yago wrote:

"Honestly, it’s strange: you win your matches against the weakest team in your group, and yet Nigeria is ahead of you, even though they didn’t even beat Zimbabwe, the bottom side in their group. Apparently, beating the last-placed team is too conventional. Thank you, CAF and FIFA! With my career coming to an end, I’ll soon study the system so I can criticize it properly."

President Traoré demands answers from CAF

The Burkinabé squad had celebrated their 3-1 win over Ethiopia, believing they’d secured a playoff spot, only to learn that Nigeria advanced thanks to goal difference.In response, the Burkinabé presidency voiced anger and confusion. President Ibrahim Traoré has requested detailed clarification from CAF regarding the ranking of the four best second-placed African teams.
