Liverpool won 2-1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday and maintained their seven point lead at the top of the Premier League table.
The Reds took a healthy 2-0 lead at the break, but it was a different story after the interval. Apart from one disallowed goal, Liverpool hardly created anything, and there were tensions around Anfield after Wolves pulled one back through Matheus Cunha.
In the end, Liverpool held on to the slender lead and managed to pick up all three points.
What turned out to be a worrying sign was the lack of intensity in Liverpool’s game after the break. The players made basic errors, failed to keep possession, and allowed Wolves to come back into the game strongly.
Stephen Warnock said that Liverpool midfielder Alexis MacAllister looked completely knackered, and overall the players have looked tired.
Arne Slot brought Wataru Endo in midfield to counter the problem. The Reds boss also admitted that more than physical fatigue, the players may have suffered a mental fatigue for the first time this season.
“Liverpool have an issue as Alexis Mac Allister looks dead on his feet,” said Warnock, as quoted by BBC Sport.
“Liverpool do look tried, but they have played a lot of games. It’s going to be interesting to see how they fare in the next few weeks.”
Slot admitted: “Fatigue comes from running a lot and a bit of mental fatigue a lot. We were mentally tested today.
“We thought we’d scored a third and then a penalty for the third but both were correct from the referee. Maybe it did lead to us being a bit tired. I did see for the first time this season that players were more tired than they have been.”
The next few games are absolutely vital for Liverpool and fans will be worried if the players are suffering from tiredness already.
The likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis MacAllister have played loads of games, and probably Slot should have rotated the squad in a better way.
MacAllister, 26, has played 35 games in all competitions for Liverpool already this season, and Gravenberch has made 34 appearances.
We might see the likes of Endo, Harvey Elliott and one or two young midfielders getting a few games now.
There’s plenty of football left to be played, and Liverpool need their key players fit and fresh for the rest of the season.
Liverpool will face Aston Villa, Manchester City and Newcastle United in their next 10 days, and the results could have a huge bearing in the title race.
