Steve Clarke has committed to Scotland until the end of the 2030 World Cup campaign, settling doubts before this summer’s tournament in North America.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the former West Brom head coach has signed for two more campaigns and will lead Scotland into next month’s finals, their first men’s World Cup in 28 years.
Appointed in May 2019 after taking Kilmarnock to third in the William Hill Premiership, he delivered back-to-back European Championships and a stint in the top tier of the UEFA Nations League. A 4-2 win over Denmark in November sealed top spot in the World Cup qualifying group.
Clarke spent just under 18 months at The Hawthorns from June 2012. He guided Albion to eighth in his only full season, the club’s highest league finish since 1981, before being stood down in December 2013 with the team 16th and two points above the drop zone.
The 62-year-old had rated his chances of staying as 50-50 in March, with no formal offer at that stage and clubs sounding him out. He wanted clarity before flying to the United States on Sunday and the Scottish Football Association has moved to provide it.
He has underlined the need for stability and long-term planning, and outlined plans to work with new chief football officer Craig Mulholland to strengthen the pathway from youth teams. Attention now turns to World Cup preparations, starting against Curacao this weekend.
