It appears youth coach Steven Smith will take charge for the time being alongside Neil McCann until Rangers appoint a permanent manager. They have stepped in as a steady hand, well respected within the club structure, and trusted by the players. Yet few will argue they are completely out of their depth at this level. The situation feels temporary but still uneasy. The club cannot afford uncertainty now, especially with key fixtures looming. That is the reality facing Rangers today.
Temporary leadership raises questions
Steven Smith has worked hard in the youth setup and earned respect for his professionalism and loyalty. He understands the Rangers way and knows how the club should operate. Yet the step up from coaching youngsters to leading a senior side fighting for trophies is vast. Many inside Ibrox know this cannot last long. Fans want stability and experience. They will back him because he is one of our own, but they also know the truth.
European test ahead
Smith might even find himself guiding Rangers in Europe. That would be an enormous task for any coach, never mind one still cutting his teeth in management. The pressure, intensity, and spotlight of European football are unlike anything the youth setup offers. Rangers need calm leadership, tactical nous, and authority. Smith can give heart and effort, but the margins in Europe are brutal. Everyone knows this temporary fix is far from ideal.
Rangers must act fast
The board cannot delay. They must appoint a permanent solution swiftly and decisively. Steven Smith deserves credit for stepping up when the club needed him, but he should not be left to carry a burden beyond his readiness. Rangers need direction, clarity, and a leader with proven experience. The squad cannot keep drifting between uncertainty and expectation. Every day without a permanent boss weakens preparation and focus.
Supporters are patient but not blind. They see the same flaws that have hurt the club for months. A caretaker role for Smith is fine in the short term, yet this must not drift into another drawn-out saga. Rangers have been here before, stumbling through transition and hoping something sticks. It never does.
Steven Smith’s time in charge shows spirit and loyalty. Yet loyalty cannot mask reality. He is respected, but he is not ready. The board must stop dithering and find the right man now, before this temporary solution becomes another costly mistake.
