Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt believes Ineos’ new look football structure at Old Trafford needs to give Erik ten Hag time to improve results.

It has been a disappointing start to the season for Manchester United with back-to-back defeats by Brighton & Hove Albion and bitter rivals Liverpool after an opening win against Fulham.

The latest underwhelming performance at Old Trafford in the 3-0 defeat to Arne Slot’s Liverpool increased pressure on the former Ajax boss.

The Red Devils sit 14th in the table with three points from an available nine.

It has been a similar defensive pattern with teams able to create chances easily by running through midfield.

Similarly to the last campaign, the Red Devils are struggling to score goals with several big chances missed.

After the international break, Manchester United faces a trip to St Mary’s to face newly-promoted side Southampton as Ten Hag looks to stop the run of bad results.

Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt has given his verdict on the current form at Old Trafford.

The former Red Devil has backed Ten Hag to turn things around as the new summer signings settle into the squad.

Speaking to SkySports, the former treble winner said: “I think that the international break has come at a good time for the manager and team.

“They can focus on some things on the training ground, get some players back fit with no injuries hopefully, and go again.

“He’s [Ten Hag] got some winnable games coming up, but at Man United, you are always under pressure, I think Erik ten Hag knows that.

“To me, it looks like right down the spine, it looks wide open and people can run right through the middle.

“They’ve brought the new lad {Manuel Ugarte] in. so hopefully he can fill the gap.

“We’ve got some very talented players and hopefully we can get them playing the way the manager wants and get some results.

“They’re [Ineos] going to have to bide their time and stick with the manager. If they’re not going to do that, they might as well have got rid of him in the summer.”
