Emanuel Emegha has experienced backlash from his own Strasbourg supporters after announcing his imminent move to Chelsea next season.
Fans held up banners in the crowd, baying for the forward’s revoked captaincy against Le Havre. They have also voiced discontent with the French side’s link to Todd Boehly’s BlueCo franchise. Strasbourg’s chairman, Marc Keller, has had to come out and voice his support for the Dutch striker.
After that game, head coach Liam Rosenior stated that he fully supports Emegha and that he will retain his captaincy as long as the manager remains at the club. Keller, during a press conference, supported Rosenior.
“This is unacceptable; I couldn’t have imagined this. Emegha was attacked. The club is built on values that don’t represent them. We will take action.”
Alain Plet, Deputy Director General of Strasbourg, had more to say on the latter point. “We’re going to develop measures that we’ll present to those involved. Things are going to change. I’ll tell those involved first what those changes will be. We shouldn’t cause panic, but some people have crossed a line.” So, the exact nature of the measures is not yet known.
Emegha was sidelined for Strasbourg last weekend due to an injury, yet still saw these nasty events unfold. It’s not yet known whether the striker will be able to play against Paris FC on Sunday. If he does, it will be his first encounter with his own supporters on the pitch since these incidents started happening.
