Strasbourg rein in spending after UEFA fine, focus on sales as Reyna arrives | OneFootball

After last year’s heavy outlay, Strasbourg have pivoted to sales this summer. The squad has still been refreshed in part, with Giovanni Reyna arriving and further additions possible.

According to L'Équipe, owner BlueCo has had to recalibrate its transfer strategy after a €13m UEFA fine, so the window has so far been driven by departures. The balance is currently strongly positive at €41m.

Reyna, 23, has 10 goals in 43 United States caps, the latest an outside-of-the-boot strike against Paraguay in a 4-1 World Cup win on 13 June. A Borussia Dortmund graduate, he broke through in 2020-2021 and lifted the German Cup.

Frequent muscle injuries checked his rise and a January 2024 loan to Nottingham Forest did not stick. Nor did a spell at Mönchengladbach, who bought him from Dortmund in summer 2025 for €7m. Strasbourg have signed him for €3m on a five-year deal as he seeks a reset.

Pre-season has been bruising, with six defeats, 0-7 to Sporting CP on 20 July, 0-2 to Blackburn Rovers on 25 July, 3-4 at Brighton on 1 August, 2-5 at Elversberg on 4 August, then 0-2 twice against Freiburg on 8 August. One friendly remains, at Newcastle on Sunday at 17:00.

Founded in 1906, Strasbourg are set for a 66th top-flight season and were champions in 1978-1979. Only eight clubs have more, counting the coming campaign, Marseille 77, Saint-Étienne and Rennes 70, Bordeaux 69, Monaco, Lyon and Nice 68, Lille 67.
