As Liverpool’s international contingent disperses this week, one player’s performances abroad will be of particular interest to Arne Slot and his staff — Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward’s start to life at Anfield has been uneven, but the coming days could prove vital in determining his readiness for the Premier League’s resumption.
Alexander Isak’s arrival at Liverpool was met with excitement and expectation. A proven Premier League striker, his consistent 20-plus goal seasons in England made him one of the most high-profile forwards in the division. Yet, the early weeks of his Liverpool career have offered only glimpses of his potential.
Six appearances have yielded just one goal — a sharp strike against Southampton in the Carabao Cup — and his playing time has been managed cautiously. With outings lasting 58, 23, 45, 84, and 28 minutes respectively before his latest substitution in the 74th minute at Stamford Bridge, Isak is clearly still being integrated into Slot’s tactical framework.
The lack of a proper pre-season, combined with Liverpool’s inconsistent performances, has limited his rhythm. As Slot works to rebuild fluency in his attacking unit, the Swede’s form and fitness have become key talking points within the club.
Slot’s admiration for how Sweden have handled Isak’s workload in the past is well-documented. Following the striker’s initial call-up shortly after signing for Liverpool, the Dutch coach publicly praised national team manager Jon Dahl Tomasson for his restraint.
“The Swedish manager deserves a big compliment because he gets the best striker in the world but understands if he plays 90 minutes twice, he might be injured for a number of weeks,” Slot said after the last international break. “We will treat him the same as they did.”
That careful management continued domestically, with Isak omitted entirely from the squad for Liverpool’s 1–0 win at Burnley, as Slot looked to ease his record signing into action. The hope now, however, is that Isak can use Sweden’s next fixtures to rediscover sharpness rather than conserve energy.
Sweden’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers — at home to Switzerland in Stockholm and Kosovo in Gothenburg — arrive at an important juncture for both player and club. After disappointing results in the previous round, the national side needs victories to regain momentum, and Isak’s involvement could be decisive.
For Slot, these matches offer a rare double benefit. Regular minutes at international level could accelerate Isak’s match fitness and confidence, potentially sharpening him ahead of Liverpool’s crucial clash against Manchester United on 19 October. The Reds’ boss will no doubt be watching closely, eager to see his forward return both fit and firing.
While Liverpool’s broader issues will not be resolved in one international window, a revitalised Isak could change the tone around the team. His ability to score in bursts, link up play, and provide a consistent outlet up front remains invaluable.
Goals have a way of easing tension — both in dressing rooms and fan discussions. If Sweden can help restore Isak’s form, the ripple effect could extend well beyond his national team. For Liverpool, a confident and clinical Isak would provide precisely the kind of spark needed to steady their season’s trajectory.
As Slot monitors developments from Merseyside, he’ll be hoping his £80 million forward returns not just refreshed, but ready to lead the line with authority. If Sweden can help facilitate that, further compliments from Anfield are sure to follow.
