The last few days have moved quickly for Patrick van Aanholt. On Friday, he was called by Sparta Rotterdam and now today (Tuesday) he was presented by the club as their latest signing.
When making the choice for his new club, the left-back revealed that he made phone calls to Kevin Strootman and Denzel Dumfries among others.
The former Crystal Palace man had been without a club since last summer and still had an undisclosed option. However, he chose Sparta. Speaking of his quick move, the 34-year-old told of the process:
“Friday was the first phone call, Sunday it was getting going and Monday the medical examination. Now the deal is done.”
Not only did Van Aanholt have a good conversation with head coach Maurice Steijn and his staff, but he also contacted a number of Sparta acquaintances to help him make his choice:
“I know De Guzman, I often played against him and was with him at Oranje. Mo (Mohammed Nassoh) as well. He comes from PSV. They said it is a nice and good club. (Strootman and Dumfries) said it is a really warm family club. I am just ready for it.
“I’m just (about) fit and I’ve been training for myself all summer. (Full fitness) comes from playing matches. I’m not worried about that. As soon as I step onto the field with the players, I’m going to give one hundred percent. I know how to take care of my body. After all these years, I’m in good shape.”
Van Aanholt is eligible to start for Sparta, but it is uncertain as to whether he’ll make his debut for De Kasteelheren against AZ Alkmaar in a week and a half.
