Stuttgart emerge as potential takers for Mainz striker Nelson Weiper

Kicker lists VfB Stuttgart as potential takers for disaffected Mainz striker Nelson Weiper. After recently being demoted to his current Bundesliga club’s youth ranks due to a messy contract dispute, Kicker reported yesterday that Weiper and Mainz are at an irreconcilable stalemate. Stuttgart may find Weiper to be the perfect replacement for his more famous Germany U21 teammate Nick Woltemade.

Stuttgart have managed to fend off an aggressive Bayern Munich approach for Woltemade this summer, but are likely destined to lose him to the German record champions next year at the very latest. Stuttgart have maintained some interest in Weiper – who is a similar sort of player to Woltemade – in the past before being deterred by a double digit million asking price.

All of that has been rendered irrelevant now. Kicker claimed yesterday that Mainz management is actively seeking to offload Weiper before the current transfer window closes. As he sits on an expiring contract, Weiper will permitted to negotiate a free transfer away from Mainz once the January window opens.

Weiper maintains an estimated market value of €10m and Mainz will seek at least that for the 20-year-old. Stuttgart should have no problem meeting that price as the Swabians have demonstrated that they can command upwards of €75m for Woltemade.
