Subsequent events explain Martin O’Neill’s decision to rule out Celtic contract option | OneFootball

Concerns over Martin O’Neill’s health are certainly understandable, but he’s a strong character, and won’t be giving up easily but he won’t be staying on longer then this season…

Like every other Celtic supporter, I send nothing but my sincere best wishes to Martin O’Neill who earlier this week underwent minor surgery to correct a routine issue.

A minor medical matter

What type of surgery the popular Irishman underwent remains a private medical matter between him and his doctors, but by all accounts, it’s nothing to be too concerned about, and he will hopefully back in the dugout when he is ready to get back to work.

Although, it’s not been confirmed if that will be at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon, and he could well miss the live TV clash against Neil McCann’s side, with Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham more than capable of taking the team in East Ayrshire.

Martin O’Neill is a strong character

Martin is 74, and naturally he will be more fragile and vulnerable to the pressures of a position as demanding as the Celtic job, much more than he was at the sprightly young age of 48 when he first arrived at the club to start a successful five year spell back in the summer of 2000.

But Martin O’Neill is a strong character. The Irishman looks after himself both physically and mentally, and is still as enthusiastic and as sharp as he was in his prime.

Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus can all step up

Obviously Martin in his senior years is more susceptible to the huge demands and expectations placed upon him in the Celtic managerial position, but he’s got the more younger, capable and able figure around him in Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus to help with the demands and pressures of running Celtic Football Club.

Fans have rightly been concerned over Martin’s health, especially with an emotionally draining campaign ahead, but he is a tough character, and won’t be giving up easily.

Subsequent events perhaps explain why Martin ruled out taking up the one year option next summer

Martin wouldn’t have taken on the job if he harboured any doubts over his ability to perform, that’s a cert. He thought long and hard before agreeing to take the job for another year with a further one year option. Yet on Monday evening in an interview on Sky Sports ahead of the 1-0 win over Dundee in the Scottish Premiership opener, he ruled out taking that option up.

Many believed that was to do with the club’s snail paced transfer dealing leaving him frustrated and the team vulnerable but subsequent events this week presents an alternative theory,  that being he’ll see out the year then accept that his time working as a football manager is at an end.

What that also does is give Celtic a full season to recruit the next Celtic manager, thanks to Martin’s intelligent approach to this matter.

Expectations are huge managing Celtic

He’s made of strong stuff is Martin, and whilst the pressures and expectations of managing Celtic are huge, especially for a man who’s slowly approaching three quarters of a century, he’s the man for the job, for this season at least, you can be sure of that.

Hopefully he takes on board the advice from Chris Sutton and stays at home this weekend to watch the Kilmarnock v Celtic match on television.
