According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland’s Europa League return could open a pathway for Academy of Light youngsters next season, with List A and List B selections to be finalised.

The club will learn their league-phase opponents on 28 August. Régis Le Bris is weighing up additions around his senior group.

Jenson Jones, 19, is a standout candidate. A versatile defender who can play left-back, right-back or in midfield, he is highly rated by Le Bris, has a Carabao Cup appearance and featured in pre-season before Sunderland’s Premier League return.

Jaydon Jones, 19, has progressed well and is well regarded at the academy. He can operate as a six or eight, although breaking into midfield looks difficult with Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fée and Habib Diarra in place, before any further signings.

Forward Trey Ogunsuyi, 19, may be the most obvious attacking option. After loans at Falkirk and Shrewsbury Town last season, his pace and finishing from the middle or right could offer a bench threat in certain European games, though another loan remains an option.

Finn Geragusian, 18, is tall, powerful and technically sharp, able to play wide or centrally. He is considering a new deal and wants clarity over his pathway, so potential Europa League involvement may aid the club’s stance.

Jack Whittaker, 19, is in a similar contract position after an impressive under-21s campaign. Comfortable wide, as a ten or even an eight, he could provide flexibility and a spark from the bench.
