Sunderland released their 2024/25 accounts on Tuesday, covering the promotion campaign, and posted an operating loss of £1.1 million.
Across three Championship seasons the club lost just under £20 million. Sunderland Echo notes a £45,853,000 profit on player trading prevented a very significant loss in this period.
The accounting period ran to the end of July last year, capturing major post-promotion ins and outs plus sizeable bonus payments. Staff costs rose above turnover mainly due to bonuses and initial Premier League contracts.
Since the start of August, net transfer spend totals £47,436,348, with £101,641,979 still owed to other clubs from summer deals.
Turnover increased by just over £2 million, helped by the new EFL TV deal and play-off participation.
Retail and merchandising income fell from just under £3,000,000 to £1,180,000, despite strong demand for the Hummel range.
Shareholder debt remains £19,820,000, interest free, and the owners have said they will convert it to equity at some stage.
The notes celebrate academy impact, citing Chris Rigg’s significant appearances and Tommy Watson scoring the winning goal at Wembley. The club also recorded disappointment at being unable to stage a Stadium of Light concert last summer.
