Sunderland and Aston Villa explored moves for Colombian striker Kevin Viveros this summer, but he is now close to a new contract at Athletico Paranaense, ESPN Brazil reports.

Sport Witness claims both clubs made tentative enquiries during the window, with Viveros in prolific form, scoring 17 goals in 25 league appearances this season.

The report adds that Athletico have a verbal agreement in place with the 26-year-old. His current deal runs to 2028, and the club want to secure his long-term future with improved terms.

It is suggested any future transfer could cost up to £34.7 million, a sizeable increase on what might have been required in the summer.

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s interest in Geny Catamo has also hit a potential snag. A Bola reports Sporting are keen to negotiate an extension after resisting approaches for the winger.

Catamo’s contract is in place until 2029, and Sporting may add a year or two and raise his salary. The Mozambique international has started the campaign strongly, with two goals and three assists in his first six outings, his latest strike coming against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
