Chemsdine Talbi marked his return to the Sunderland side with the winning goal as the Black Cats edged past Hull City 1-0 to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Régis Le Bris made 11 changes from the weekend draw at Brentford, while Hull also rotated heavily for a scrappy contest at the Stadium of Light.
The visitors had an early penalty appeal turned down after Robinio Vaz went down under a challenge from Luke O'Nien, while Sunderland gradually began to create openings. Dillon Phillips made important saves to deny Jules Ahoka and Talbi before the break.
Hull threatened after half-time, with Sorba Thomas forcing Melker Ellborg into a save from a free-kick, but Sunderland eventually found the breakthrough with 19 minutes remaining.
Thomas Meunier flicked the ball into Talbi’s path on the counter, allowing the Morocco international to race through and calmly chip Phillips for his first goal of the campaign.
Hull pushed for an equaliser late on, but Sunderland held firm to book their place in the fourth round.
