Sunderland interim CEO Tom Burwell says expanding the Stadium of Light remains under constant discussion, with any project potentially costing £250m, according to Sunderland Echo.

He briefed supporters at the latest Supporters’ Collective Meeting and the club will continue to explore options to maximise attendance and revenue. The ground holds just under 49,000.

The club has worked with Sunderland City Council on plans for the neighbouring Sheepfolds site to preserve the ability to extend the South Stand. It opposed the initial scheme but backed a revised plan that restores a commercial buffer zone.

Inside the club there is debate over whether expansion stacks up given current manufacturing costs and the likely dividend from extra seats. The hierarchy is keen to grow hospitality and there is a waiting list for executive boxes.

Around 16% of seats at Everton’s Hill Dickinson are premium, compared with 6% at the Stadium of Light. The season-ticket waiting list recognises how the club is performing, but demand will fluctuate, which any proposal must factor in.
