Sunderland are weighing changes to Régis Le Bris’ backroom team, with talks under way to add former Middlesbrough and Hartlepool goalkeeper Pete Jameson, 33, to the academy, according to Sunderland Echo.

No agreement is in place, but discussions centre on Jameson working with the U18s and U21s to strengthen the goalkeeping pathway below first-team level. His arrival could prompt adjustments higher up the structure.

Jonny Maddison, who has worked in the academy and was recently involved with the first team, could step up as a first-team goalkeeper coach. He would work under lead coach Neil Cutler, with sporting director Florent Ghisolfi understood to be keen to deepen specialist support.

Alessandro Barcherini, previously head of goalkeeping, remains as an assistant and first-team coach under Le Bris. Initially interim last season, he now focuses more on the defensive unit and individual development plans.

Sunderland-born Jameson came through Middlesbrough’s youth ranks and made more than 130 appearances for Darlington, with further spells at York City, Harrogate Town and Hartlepool. He played 21 times for Hartlepool in 2023-24 on loan, then rejoined Darlington before becoming a player-coach at Gateshead in July 2025, with an emergency loan back to Darlington earlier this year.

Matty Young is close to new terms after impressing at Salford City, Ben Metcalf’s one-year option has been triggered, and Joe Cowan and Isaac Allan remain under contract. Dan Cameron and Adam Richardson are set to move on as the club reviews its set-up after Luciano Vulcano’s February exit.
