Sunderland have drawn AC Milan in the Europa League, a dream San Siro trip for many supporters that sparked celebrations.

Sunderland Echo reports that hundreds gathered at the Fans Museum on Friday, 28 August to watch the draw live, with eight opponents confirmed shortly after noon.

Milan were drawn first, although the match date will not be confirmed until the weekend. The pairing delighted fans who have long heard Newcastle United taunts of “have you ever seen a Mackem in Milan?”, after their rivals played there in 2003 and 2023.

Fans Museum founder Michael Ganley said he was almost speechless at the outcome, calling it the tie everyone wanted. Supporters marked the draw with pints and pies.

Adam Pinkney said he was surprised Milan came out first and that the tie felt even better than he expected, while Luke Murphy said seeing red and white in Italy would be special and felt the atmosphere would be amazing even if he cannot travel.

Sunderland will also travel to Anderlecht in Brussels, Lech Poznan in Poland and Torreense in Portugal.

Home fixtures have been confirmed against AZ Alkmaar, Dinamo Zagreb, Jagiellona and Levski Sofia. UEFA is due to release dates and times by Sunday, 30 August, with details expected on Saturday.
