Sunderland fan groups met club leaders at the mid-May Supporters’ Collective, where a new head of grounds was confirmed. According to Sunderland Echo, interim CEO Tom Burwell and director of football Florent Ghisolfi attended, with finances and a potential Stadium of Light expansion discussed.

Supporter Dave Rose thanked the ownership and praised Kristjaan Speakman’s work in the academy, seeking reassurance that such attention to detail continues. Burwell said the academy remains a priority under Ghisolfi, adding the transition was anticipated and they worked well together.

Players from the academy are expected to be ready to perform for top 10 Premier League. The scouting team now numbers 10, and the club is recruiting a Head of the Academy.

Off the pitch, Sunderland’s business competes weekly with 19 other Premier League clubs across security, events and engagement. Burwell wants standards to match on every front, with on-field expectations setting the tone.

Before the first match, Ghisolfi urged players to “Be Sunderland” and give their best each day, prioritising representation and performance so results would follow. After hearing from the club historian that Sunderland were once the country’s leading side, he believes the club can aim high again. Burwell is building a high-performance culture on and off the pitch, with heart and humility.
