In a recent post on X, journalist Santi Aouna mentioned that Sunderland forward Eliezer Mayenda is set to join Rennes this summer. It has been mentioned that the Black Cats have reached a €25m agreement with the French club to let the Spanish striker leave this off-season.

Mayenda’s Impressive Rise In English Football

Mayenda enjoyed a run of form at the Wearside club after he put in a few impressive displays for them in the final third. The 21-year-old netted two goals and picked up one assist in 24 matches for Sunderland last season across all fronts.

The Spanish talent is currently among the most gifted young forwards in the Premier League. Hence, it is a surprise that the Black Cats are willing to let him go later this year.

His current contract at the Stadium of Light will run out in the summer of 2030. Thus, there was no immediate need to cash in on him in this transfer period.

Mayenda is proficient at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to create the odd chance for his teammates in the final third and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet.

The Spanish sensation is primarily a centre-forward but can also fill in as a winger on either flank if told to do so. At the moment, Mayenda is not a regular first-team starter at the Wearside club. Hence, it is only logical for the Black Cats to cash in on him in this transfer window.

We can expect Mayenda to benefit from securing a regular first-team football away from the Stadium of Light. Hence, it makes sense for him to seek a move elsewhere soon.

At 21, the future looks quite bright for Mayenda as long as he continues to improve with each season. All in all, his departure would be a good move for both the player and the Wearside club ahead of the new campaign as Sunderland can use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of their match-day squad.
