Sunderland are making headway in their bid for Geny Catamo, with discussions continuing with Sporting over a potential deal. Sunderland Echo understands that progress on the player side is positive, although significant work remains before any move could be finalised.

Club-to-club talks with Sporting are ongoing after Sunderland stepped up their interest in the 25-year-old.

The club have explored work permit scenarios and possible routes should an agreement be reached. That planning is understood to be preparatory rather than evidence that a transfer is already done.

Sporting’s stance is a major factor. The Portuguese club confirmed a release clause when Catamo signed a new contract in December 2023, and they have so far taken a firm line over the Mozambique international.

Catamo is a left-footed right winger who has also filled in at wing-back and on the opposite flank. He wears Sporting’s number 10 shirt and is an established Mozambique international.

There is no agreement between the clubs at this stage, but headway with Catamo himself represents another step as Sunderland continue to push for a deal.
