Sunderland are pressing to sign Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo, who is open to a Premier League switch, according to A Bola.

It is reported an offer of around £34m has been tabled, with progress said to hinge on a bid closer to his £52m release clause. The winger is said to welcome the move but will not force an exit.

Talks have been ongoing for three weeks and Sunderland hope for a breakthrough soon, though their immediate focus is finalising an imminent deal for Toulouse and France Under-21 defender Dayann Methalie. Regis Le Bris’ back line was strengthened weeks ago with Belgium international Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract after leaving Lille.

Catamo, 25, is a Mozambique international and has 21 goals in 130 senior appearances for Sporting.

After the win against RC Lens at the Stadium of Light, Le Bris said the window remains unpredictable and recruitment must be precise. He stressed new signings do not automatically make a team stronger, pointing instead to culture and cohesion shown in America and again against Lens. He added the Premier League will be demanding, a new step forward.
