Sunderland are reportedly still in the race for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi this summer, with Barcelona and Bournemouth also keen. Il Resto del Carlino reports that the 28-year-old could be available for about £22m.

The Black Cats are said to have pursued Lucumi in the last window and made an approach after a release clause expired, but Bologna rejected it.

Sunderland then cooled their interest in January when no agreement was found, focusing elsewhere. Even so, Lucumi’s situation is being monitored ahead of the summer.

Despite a strong Serie A campaign, he has not signed fresh terms, with his deal running until 2027. His representatives have indicated a wish to explore options, and Bologna are understood to be open to a sale to avoid depreciation.

Competition is growing. Barcelona are reportedly tracking him as a more affordable alternative to Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, while Bournemouth are said to be considering him as they assess replacements for Marcos Senesi. Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are also credited with serious interest.

Bologna are believed to be factoring the upcoming World Cup into their plans, since a strong tournament could drive up his price and intensify the chase. That scenario may further complicate Sunderland’s hopes. His European experience and consistent form add to his appeal at the top level.
