Sunderland face mounting competition from Barcelona and Bournemouth for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, who could be available for about £22m this summer.

Il Resto del Carlino reports that Sunderland have retained a long-standing interest after pursuing the 28-year-old last summer. An approach following the expiry of a release clause was rejected, and Bologna kept a key defensive asset.

Sunderland then stepped back in January, though they continue to monitor his situation ahead of the next window.

Lucumi’s future remains unresolved. Despite a strong Serie A campaign, he has yet to sign fresh terms, with his deal running to 2027. His representatives are exploring options and Bologna are open to a sale to protect value.

That has drawn interest elsewhere. Barcelona are said to be monitoring him as a more affordable alternative to Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni, while Bournemouth are considering him as they assess potential replacements for Marcos Senesi.

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are also credited with strong interest and the resources to compete. Bologna are factoring the upcoming World Cup into their plans, with a standout tournament likely to increase the asking price and complicate Sunderland’s chances.
