According to a report from Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus travelled to Lyon to convince Malick Fofana (21) to join the Premier League club. His trip to the Rhône region of France was successful, with the Belgian international forward agreeing to join the Black Cats, Sacha Tavolieri understands.
Due to the uncertaintiy around his next club, the 21-year-old completed a medical at a private hospital in Lyon to make his transfer more seamless once he had decided on his next club. Crystal Palace were the biggest contenders to Sunderland for the former Gent forward’s services. However, Arsenal also considered a move for the winger but were unwilling to match the Ligue 1 club’s €40m asking price.
After intervention from the Wearside club’s owners, it appears the attacker will now finally move to the Stadium of Light. However, with just two hours before the end of the window, there could be another twist in the tale.
