Sunderland are entering negotiations over a second loan spell for Jayden Danns, despite his first one not going as anyone would have wanted.
Sunderland are set to discuss a potential second loan deal with Premier League champions Liverpool for Jayden Danns - despite the striker not making a single appearance for the Black Cats after arriving on transfer deadline day in February.
The Black Cats originally took Danns on loan from Liverpool on the final day of the mid-season transfer window, but his medical at the Stadium of Light revealed an issue with the player's back which required a longer period absent than anyone had previously anticipated.
Danns had picked up an injury during the 2024/25 pre-season for Liverpool and didn't return to training until November 2024, but without any symptoms it was expected that he would go into the Sunderland first-team squad upon his arrival there.
Instead, Danns spent the rest of the season in the treatment room, unable to play for anyone.
Sunderland ended the season in style, beating Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final to secure a return to the Premier League following an absence of eight years, and Danns could end up being a part of that.
The Northern Echo reports this morning that Sunderland are now preparing for the possibility of a second loan spell for Danns, despite last season's injury preventing him from playng a single minute.
They report that ongoing discussions between Danns and the Black Cats' manager Regis Le Bris "have helped form a strong relationship" with the Sunderland boss, and that the Liverpool hierarchy are "impressed" at how Sunderland handled the situation of the striker.
Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda are already under contract for next season but beyond that, Sunderland's striker options are scarce, which could pave the way for Danns to sign on again and finally make a belated Black Cats debut.
Danns made the step-up to the Liverpool first team squad for the start of the 2023/24 season, though he had to wait to make his mark on their first team.
He made his Premier League debut for them with a brief appearance against Luton Town in February 2024, and also came on as a late substitute for them in that year's EFL Cup final against Chelsea, four days later.
Three days after that, he scored his first senior goals, notching a brace in a 3-0 win against Southampton in the FA Cup Fifth Round. Shortly after these two big matches, he also signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool.

Danns' loan move to Sunderland came about at the very end of the January transfer window, but his medical at the Stadium of Light threw up an immediate complication, a back injury which hadn't even shown the player any symptoms.
It had originally been expected that he would return to Sunderland after his rehabilitation, but this ended up taking far longer than anyone had anticipated, and it turned out that he didn't make a single appearance for the Black Cats throughout the second half of the season.
But despite this, manager Regis Le Bris stayed in touch with the player, and this seems to have brought benefits now that the end of the season has come around.
The news that the Liverpool powers-that-be had been impressed by the way the club had managed what could have been a difficult situation could grant Sunderland benefits in the future - perhaps even beyond getting Danns back for another season.
Retaining good relations with the biggest Premier League clubs could help Sunderland out a lot, giving them a significant potential advantage in the event that they wish to take other players on loan, as they look to secure their Premier League status next season.
