Sunderland pre-season takeaways: Timur Tutierov shines, Chris Rigg central, Ellborg serenaded | OneFootball

Sunderland’s pre-season opener at York offered more than fitness minutes, with Timur Tutierov impressing, Chris Rigg central and a cult hero serenaded. According to Sunderland Echo, the friendly chiefly built sharpness and gave academy prospects chances.

Former Black Cat Zak Johnson, now a York player after a loan, promotion and permanent move, was warmly applauded when the teams were read out.

Tutierov started despite previous expectations that he could depart in a deal similar to Zak Johnson and Harrison Jones. The teenager scored and created another in a strong first-half display, which raised curiosity over his future, though one July selection proves little.

Rigg began in central midfield with Jocelin Ta Bi to the right, and scored while showing greater strength on the ball against League Two opponents. At 19, it might hint at physical maturity that could matter if Régis Le Bris uses him centrally.

Swedish keeper Melker Ellborg, largely back-up to Robin Roefs, had his name sung throughout the first half, echoing support heard in last season’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Romaine Mundle and Dan Ballard sat out as they continue injury returns. Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson did not feature for either XI, his future still unresolved despite training, while Alan Browne played the first half amid uncertainty over his role.

Aji Alese also returned after a long lay-off, playing the second half at left-back as he builds fitness, with the focus on keeping him available across pre-season.
