Stade Malherbe Caen centre-forward Alexandre Mendy (30) will remain with the Normandy Ligue 2 side, according to a report from Ouest-France. The 30-year-old has topped Ligue 2’s goalscoring charts last season with 22 strikes and was expected to join Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats after agreeing to sign for the EFL Championship side. The outlet understands that Kylian Mbappé and his entourage – the new owners of Caen – have made retaining Mendy a priority.
Given Caen’s reluctance to sell him to Sunderland, the Guinea Bissau international resorted himself to stick around for a further season with the Ligue 2 side. Mendy is tied with the Normandy outfit over a contract set to expire in 2026. Mendy is expected to return to Nicolas Seube’s matchday squads with Caen yet to register a single point in Ligue 2 this season. Caen will host Annecy this Friday evening.
