Régis Le Bris makes one change for Sunderland’s trip to Chelsea on the final day, Luke O’Nien replacing Omar Alderete, who has a hip issue but is fit enough for the bench. O’Nien impressed as a substitute in the 3-1 win over Everton.

Chemsdine Talbi is out with a muscle problem, so Nilson Angulo keeps his place on the left. Bertrand Traoré returns to the matchday squad for his first involvement since March’s 1-0 victory over Leeds. According to Sunderland Echo, Alderete could feature later if required.

Sunderland XI is Roefs in goal, Geertruida, Mukiele, O’Nien and Reinildo in defence, Xhaka and Sadiki in midfield, with Hume, Le Fee and Angulo supporting Brobbey.

Chelsea are boosted by Joao Pedro’s return to the starting XI after he missed the 2-1 win over Spurs with a minor injury. Reece James is among the substitutes and Levi Colwill starts, a strong-looking selection from interim boss Calum McFarlane.

Le Bris resisted calls to use a more attacking right winger, stressing Trai Hume’s importance to recent momentum and balance. He said control depends on defensive work, highlighting how Everton’s Ndiaye was contained, and noted his young wide players still need time. He also underlined Hume’s versatility across defence and midfield, accepting he offers less in the final third.

For Europe, Sunderland must beat Chelsea, a draw will not suffice given their goal difference to Brentford. They reach the Conference League if Brentford fail to beat Liverpool, or if Brentford win but Brighton lose to Manchester United. If Brentford do not beat Liverpool and Brighton lose, Sunderland would qualify for the Europa League.
