Sunderland are weighing defensive additions for a season spanning the Premier League and Europa League, having already signed Thomas Meunier on a free two-year deal. They are being linked with Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie, while updates surround Timothée Pembélé and Dennis Cirkin.

According to Football Insider, Sunderland are lining up a move for 20-year-old Dayann Methalie as they seek another option on the left of Régis Le Bris’ defence.

Methalie enjoyed a breakthrough with Toulouse last season, playing 28 Ligue 1 matches with two goals and one assist. Le Bris and his staff are tracking the French market, and director of football Florent Ghisolfi knows Ligue 1 well, though there is no sign of an offer or advanced talks.

He was linked with Newcastle United in January and has spoken about stepping up: “It is flattering. One day, I will have to leave. I would like to play at the highest level. For now, I have to keep doing what I am doing”, he told Telefoot.

L’Équipe claims Timothée Pembélé is set to rejoin Le Havre permanently after a loan there in the second half of last season. Signed from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, the 23-year-old struggled for regular minutes.

Capable at right-back or wing-back, a permanent exit would offer Pembélé a fresh start and help streamline Sunderland’s squad. Former left-back Dennis Cirkin departed at the end of his contract, and Schalke are understood to be monitoring his situation after his role in the rise from League One to the Premier League.
