Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland have triggered a one-year option in Jenson Jones’s contract. The decision keeps the 19-year-old at the Academy of Light until at least the summer of 2027.
Jones signed his first professional deal in July 2024 to run through to the summer of 2026, with a 12-month clause now activated. He joined the club aged six and became a regular at U21 level.
Regarded as a versatile option, he can operate at full-back or in central midfield and has gained increasing exposure to Régis Le Bris’s first team.
Jones featured in pre-season, then made his senior competitive debut early in the campaign with 45 minutes in the EFL Cup against Huddersfield Town. He has since been named on the bench seven times in the Premier League and twice in the FA Cup.
In March’s derby at St James’ Park, with Sunderland’s squad stretched, he was among the substitutes and close to being called upon given the limited senior options.
For the U21s, Jones made seven appearances in the Premier League Cup, including the final against Burnley at the Stadium of Light. He also featured in Premier League 2, the National League Cup and the Premier League International Cup, collecting regular minutes across multiple competitions.
