Sunderland weighing up reunion with 22-year-old | OneFootball

Sunderland are considering recalling winger Jack Diamond from his loan spell at League One outfit Lincoln City, according to the Daily Mail.

The 22-year-old is currently thriving at the LNER Stadium, recording eight goals and two assists in 24 competitive appearances this term and establishing himself as a majorly important figure for the Imps.

Following in the footsteps of Brennan Johnson and Morgan Rogers by making a major impact for the third-tier side, he hasn’t been able to guide his current loan team to the top half of the division but is currently benefitting his own career by continuing to perform well.

The Black Cats, meanwhile, have seen the likes of Ellis Simms, Ross Stewart and Amad Diallo shine this season with the club adapting extremely well to life in the Championship following their promotion last year.

However, their firepower in the final third has been reduced by the recall of Simms who has been recalled by Everton and Stewart is being linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light too.

With this, Tony Mowbray’s side could look to add another attacking option by bringing Diamond back to Wearside and they are actively considering a recall.

Although Lincoln are keen to keep hold of him, the Black Cats have the option to bring him back and that’s bad news for Lincoln considering how integral the 22-year-old has been to their cause.

The Verdict:

If they can avoid recalling him, the Black Cats should because he’s doing extremely well in the third tier and it would be a shame if his development was disrupted by a potential recall.

The Black Cats need to focus on bringing orthodox centre-forwards in with Simms heading back to Goodison Park and Stewart being linked with an exit – and that potential focus could boost Lincoln in their quest to keep him considering Diamond operates as a winger.

Although they should probably let him stay put at his current loan side, the Wearside club should definitely be looking into the possibility of giving him more game time next season and you would certainly trust Mowbray to give him a decent number of first-team opportunities.

How many minutes he wins at the Stadium of Light next season may depend on which division they are in next season though – because there’s a slight chance they will win back-to-back promotions.

The ingredients are certainly there for them to push with the likes of Diallo, Patrick Roberts and Stewart at their disposal and there are no guarantees Diamond will feature at all if they are in the top tier next term, so Diamond needs to focus on putting himself in the shop window.
