Nick Woltemade's unfortunate own goal early in the second half was enough for Sunderland to win their first Tyne-Wear derby in 10 years.
Games between these two are always fiercely contested but this was far from a classic in terms of on-pitch entertainment.
Indeed, it was telling that although Woltemade's own goal as he attempted to defend a cross from the right before diverting it past Aaron Ramsdale came in a second half that saw very little goalmouth action.
It was always an absorbing contest though, especially when midway through that second period Régis Le Bris' side set up shop and looked to strike on the counter. Newcastle struggled to create though, having just two attempts on goal worth a total of just 0.29xG.
In fact, some of the best entertainment in the game came from the inevitable scuffle in stoppage time after a frustrated and unnecessary challenge on Robin Roefs.
Referee Peter Bankes ended up brandishing four yellow cards in quick succession shortly before blowing the final whistle to ensure that the Black Cats secured all three points.
Sunderland are now up into seventh position, four points ahead of Newcastle down in 12th.
