Sunderland’s defensive resilience continues, but their chance creation lags behind many rivals, with only Wolves and Burnley posting lower expected goals this season.
After three defeats, Sunderland took a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth then a 1-0 away win to collect four points. Only Liverpool 22, Manchester City 27 and Everton 33 have conceded fewer than their 34. Sunderland Echo reports that they sit 18th for expected goals on 27.0.
Tottenham 29.0 and Nottingham Forest 33.5 are the nearest teams above them for xG, followed by Everton on 34.9.
Sunderland have outscored their xG with 30 goals, yet that total is the third-lowest in the league, ahead of only Forest 28 and Wolves 22.
Chelsea top the xG charts on 57.3 with 53 goals scored. Arsenal are fourth on 49.9, boast the division’s best defence with 22 conceded, and have struck 59.
Upcoming opponents Brighton rank 10th for xG on 42.1 and have underperformed, scoring 38.
