Sunderland have spent heavily since returning to the Premier League, and a lively deadline day capped their winter business.

According to Transfermarkt, Sunderland’s 2025/26 net spend stands at €160.69m, sixth in the league. Arsenal lead on €280.30m, ahead of Liverpool on €263.40m. Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United follow on €199.52m, €183.10m and €176.50m.

Simon Adingra left on loan to AS Monaco, who hold an option to buy, despite only arriving from Brighton in the summer. Sunderland moved quickly, signing Ecuador international Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht as cover.

There were also fears Lutsharel Geertruida could cut short his loan from RB Leipzig for a temporary switch to Liverpool, but Sunderland dismissed that prospect. The club made 15 summer signings, including Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs, Habib Diarra and Nordi Mukiele, to gear up for the top flight.

Sunderland’s figure is almost €58m more than Newcastle United, who had a quiet January and offset their summer buys with the British record sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool. Chelsea have the smallest loss at just €4.90m after major ins and outs.

Four clubs posted a profit this season, led by Bournemouth on €130.31m after big-money sales of Antoine Semenyo, Ilya Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Dango Ouattara.
