Sunderland head into the final international break buoyed by Brian Brobbey’s last minute winner at St James Park, a result that completed a league double over Newcastle and left them 11th, three points off Europe.
According to Sunderland Echo, Opta’s predictive model has Sunderland finishing 12th on 51.15 points, with Arsenal projected champions on 84.77 and Manchester City second on 74.45.
Regis Le Bris’ side suffered a nightmare start as Anthony Gordon punished a Luke O’Nien header to put Newcastle ahead inside the opening 10 minutes. Chemsdine Talbi levelled just before the hour.
Brobbey then settled it in the final minute, beating Aaron Ramsdale at the second attempt to spark wild scenes in the away end. The win also extended Sunderland’s unbeaten run in league derbies to 11 games.
Le Bris said it was a big achievement to win two derbies in the same year, admitting Newcastle’s first half intensity made it tough. He praised his side’s reaction and half-time realignment, and said the victory meant a lot to players, staff and fans.
The weekend results left Sunderland 11th, within striking distance of the European places. Hopes of only a second European campaign remain, although Opta’s numbers still point to a solid mid table finish.
