Sunderland have yet to make their first signing almost a month into the summer window as they prepare for a debut Europa League campaign. There is recognition that Regis Le Bris’ squad needs reinforcement to cope with a heavier fixture list.
Sunderland Echo notes that, so far, Harrison Jones has joined Peterborough United and Milan Aleksic has moved to Partizan on loan. Dennis Cirkin, Dan Neil, Bertrand Traore and Niall Huggins became free agents on Wednesday when their contracts expired.
Attention also rests on captain Granit Xhaka, who continues to be linked with Premier League rivals. The club have rejected an £8m offer for the former Arsenal midfielder, and it is unclear whether the Blues will return with a much higher bid.
No goalkeepers have been linked. Defenders mentioned are Oscar Mingueza, Lutsharel Geertruida, Michael Parker, Enzo Boyomo, Mariano Troilo, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Viery and Jhon Lucumi.
Midfielders touted include Yassine Titraoui, Arne Engels, Kephren Thuram, Arthur Avom, Hayden Hackney, Christ Inao Oulaï, Lamare Bogarde, Jakob Breum, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Harvey Elliott, Soufian El-Faouzi and Frank Anguissa.
Wingers listed are Andre Luiz, Victor Munoz, Roony Bardghji, Chidera Ejuke, Issahaku Fatawu and Amad Diallo.
Strikers linked are Folarin Balogun, Matthis Abline, Jay Stansfield and Rumarn Burrell.
With the window running until September, the roster of names will grow as speculation around arrivals at the Stadium of Light continues.
