Sunderland Echo reports that the club’s World Cup cohort enjoyed a standout night. Nilson Angulo struck for Ecuador in a 2-1 win over Germany that sealed progression.

The 23-year-old scored from range and was named player of the match. England are among Ecuador’s possible next opponents. Sunderland view his form as a major positive and are hopeful he can make a big impact next season after settling and recovering from injury since his January move from Anderlecht.

Brian Brobbey continued his fine form for the Netherlands, scoring again and taking man of the match in a 3-1 win over Tunisia. The Dutch topped group F and will face Morocco in the round of 32 next week.

Omar Alderete’s Paraguay drew 0-0 with Australia to reach the final 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. The defender was influential but suffered a late injury scare and will be assessed.

Simon Adingra was an unused substitute as Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0 to progress to the knockouts.

Sunderland have now had four different scorers at the World Cup, a tally bettered only by PSG. Their six goals are surpassed only by Real Madrid’s nine.

So far, only Wilson Isidor is out after the group stage. Many players will likely miss the start of the club’s pre-season programme, though FIFA are compensating the club around $5,000 per player for each day at the tournament.

Attention turns to Friday, when Habib Diarra’s Senegal need to beat Iraq to keep alive hopes of advancing as a best third-placed side. On Sunday morning, Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku’s DR Congo also require a positive result against Uzbekistan.
