Wembley’s sunlit promise faded into irony as Leeds United’s display never matched the occasion, and Enzo Fernández’s 23rd-minute header always looked like the winner. The travelling support outsang and outnumbered their counterparts, but departed deflated.
According to Leeds Live, more than 34,000 Leeds fans turned the south side yellow, scarves twirling after Marching On Together as generations streamed down Wembley Way. The capital briefly felt like an extension of the city.
On the pitch Leeds had an early free-kick, then Ao Tanaka lifted over before the clearest first-half opening fell to Brenden Aaronson, who fired at Robert Sanchez when through. He later admitted he had already watched the replay on his phone several times before speaking on TV.
After the break Anton Stach tested Sanchez from range, Tanaka spooned a volley and Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed straight at the goalkeeper, yet the tide never turned. Daniel Farke switched to a back four at half-time and said the occasion might have affected some first-time Wembley participants.
For many supporters it was a maiden visit that ended with slumped shoulders and silence, the players mirroring the terraces at full-time. Some kept singing, tweaking lyrics for gallows humour, while Eddie Gray stopped for photos with smiles and handshakes.
Even so, Leeds are drawing fond national attention after a cup run not seen for generations, the quarter-final win at West Ham United the standout. From August’s Carabao Cup exit at Hillsborough to April’s Wembley farewell, their 2025/26 journey leaves memories, and the anthem endures.
