Swansea City are set to add Slovenian international Žan Vipotnik to their ranks
Swansea City are set to sign Slovenia international striker Žan Vipotnik after recently departing French outfit Bordeaux, who recently gave up their status as a professional club.
A report from Slovenian outlet Nogomedia states that the 22-year-old will join Swansea despite being closely linked with a move to Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb in recent times.
The Slovenian international only joined French Ligue Two outfit Bordeaux last season after previously being linked with Swansea's Championship rivals Sunderland, but the financial situation at the club has seen them relegated to the third tier of French football and relinquish their status as a professional club, meaning Vipotnik has been on the lookout for a new club.
And that club is set to be Swansea, in what would be a significant boost to Luke Williams' striker options, having let Jerry Yates depart for Championship rivals Derby County on loan earlier in the window.
Following the recent demise of Bordeaux as a professional club, Swansea have seemingly swooped to sign the 22-year-old after a decent maiden season in France.
The striker scored 10 times in 37 Ligue 2 games, but it was his form in his homeland which should give Swansea fans confidence that he can be the goalscorer they so desperately crave.
Vipotnik scored 23 goals in 38 appearances for Maribor during the 2022/23 season, earning him a move to France, and the likes of Sunderland and Celtic were also said to be keen on a move for him last summer.
Reports from Slovenia suggest that the 22-year-old was a wanted man this summer, with Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb chasing his signature, but it looks as if Swansea have won the race, and Vipotnik will be a Championship player this coming season.
The youngster is highly-rated in his homeland and was included in Slovenia's squad for the recent European Championships, making one appearance from the bench in his side's 1-1 draw with Serbia.
His appearance at the Euros was his ninth cap for his country, and he's scored twice since making his international debut last March.
At 22 and with a lot of games under his belt at club level, Vipotnik looks ready to come in and stake a claim for a starting berth in Williams' squad, and news of his signing will be music to the ears of Swansea's supporters.
Striker has been a real position of concern for Swansea City, so news of Vipotnik being set to join the club will be a huge relief to supporters.
As it stands, Swansea have just Liam Cullen and Mykola Kukharevych on their books at striker, with the latter having been linked with a move to Hibernian in Scotland, meaning they could have been extremely short of options up front.
Swansea have lost Jamal Lowe and Jerry Yates this summer, with Lowe returning to parent club AFC Bournemouth before agreeing a deal with Sheffield Wednesday, whilst Swansea loaned Yates to Championship rivals Derby County after a disappointing first season at the club.
