Glasgow City have announced that Irish forward Emily Whelan has penned a new long-term deal. The contract extends her stay with The Original Trailblazers until 2028.
The 22-year-old forward signed for Glasgow City ahead of the 2022/23 SWPL season from Birmingham City. During her time in Scotland, Whelan has made 89 appearances and scored 32 goals. The Republic of Ireland international was also part of the City squad that won the league title on the final day of the 2022/23 season.
Whelan received her first senior call-up at just 16 years old and made her international debut as a substitute against Poland. The attacker has gone on to win a further eight caps after her debut.
Speaking on her move, Whelan said: “I’m very excited to be staying at City. I have developed a lot both as a player and as a person. I’m keen to continue to do that at the best place for me.”
“I love Glasgow. I like where I live, and the people are very similar to those back in Ireland. I have family here too, so it really does feel like home.”
“The club means a lot to me. It has values that align a lot with mine. It’s somewhere I come into every day, and I know I’m going to learn and I know I’m going to develop. That’s thanks to what Leanne and all the staff do and also to the players I get to share a dressing room with. It really does feel like a family.”
Head Coach of Glasgow City, Leanne Ross added:
“Emily is a fantastic person to have at the club. She has an infectious personality that welcomes people into our world with kindness and positivity. She has made a huge impact both with the goals that she has scored and the contributions she makes to her teammates. A player who works hard day in, day out.”
“We’ve got aspirations for her to kick on even further, and I’m looking forward to working with her for the years to come.”
