The Ewood Park club are still waiting to get off the mark when it comes to first-team signings

Highlights

  • Blackburn Rovers struggling to make senior signings this summer due to financial uncertainty and upcoming court case in India.
  • Potential transfer saga around Sammie Szmodics as clubs show interest in Blackburn's top goal scorer last season.
  • Club may need to secure two new centre-backs, including Sean McLoughlin from Hull City, but payment structure may be an obstacle.

It has been a hugely underwhelming start to the summer transfer window for Blackburn Rovers.

The 2023/24 season ended with the Ewood Park club only narrowly avoiding relegation from the Championship with victory over Leicester City on the final day of the campaign.

Those troubles highlighted the limits on depth and quality within the squad available to John Eustace, and the need to change that in the market, with new signings.

However, while every other club in the second-tier has made at least one senior signing this summer, Blackburn are still yet to do so.

That is unlikely to have been helped by the upcoming court case in India next month, that will have a big say on how, and if, owners Venkys are able to fund the club through their own investment.

As a result, there may be something of a wait until after that court case in August, to see just how much money is going to come into the club in the window.

In turn, that may mean it is not until the final days before the market closes on 30th August, that Rovers can really get going in terms of doing their business.

Because of that, there may be some potential transfer sagas that run long into the summer for Blackburn Rovers, and we've taken a look at two of them, right here.

Sean McLoughlin

Scott Wharton looks set to miss almost all of this season through injury, while Kyle McFadzean is still yet to put pen to paper on his new contract at Ewood Park.

As a result, it looks as though the club may need to add two centre-backs to their ranks this summer. One of those linked with filling that role is Sean McLoughlin.

The 27-year-old has several years of Championship experience under his belt with current club Hull City, and so may be a useful option for Blackburn.

However, it is suggested that the Tigers would want somewhere in the region of £500,000 for the sale of the Irishman.

It is therefore thought that Rovers are looking into ways to structure the payment of that deal in a way that works for all involved.

Exactly how they are able to do that may change as the window goes on, and the situation with regards to their court case alters.

Consequently, Blackburn may not know whether they can meet Hull's demands for McLoughlin until once that issue is settled, meaning they may have to wait until late in the window for a conclusion to their interest here, one way or another.

Sammie Szmodics

Inevitably, one player currently at Ewood Park who will see plenty of speculation around his name this summer, is Sammie Szmodics.

The 2023/24 Championship golden boot winner almost single-handedly kept Blackburn up last season, which will no doubt lead to interest in his services this summer.

Reports that talks have begun over a move to Ipswich Town have been played down, and it is thought that as things stand, the 28-year-old is likely to stay at Blackburn beyond the current transfer window.

However, it is thought that there is an awareness around the club that the scenario could change if the right offer for both the club and the player was to come in from elsewhere.

Given the need for goalscorers and the profile he has made for himself in that sense, it would be no surprise to see clubs try their luck for the Republic of Ireland international.

Of course, if the court case next month goes against Venkys, and they are unable to put any more money into the club, player sales is likely to be the way that Rovers are able to continue to run.

In that case, Szmodics would obviously be one of the standout assets they could raise finances through selling.

So if the decisions in India go against Blackburn next month, it could then prompt a late scramble in the window among clubs who may feel they could take advantage of the situation at Ewood Park, to secure the services of the attacker on a relatively cheap deal.
