Vasco’s long pursuit of Nelson Deossa has cooled, and the move now looks unlikely after more than 60 days of talks.

According to Globo.com, the Rio club opened talks with the Colombian midfielder during the World Cup group stage. Negotiations advanced at one point, but an injunction that removed president Pedrinho from football operations delayed a conclusion.

Since then, Deossa joined Real Betis’s pre-season and scored in three of four warm-up matches. From being available, he became an appealing option for coach Maurício Pellegrini, who told the board he would only let the player go if a replacement was lined up.

Vasco have not officially ended their pursuit, but they now see the deal as difficult to complete. Deossa, who had agreed wages and shown an interest in moving during the World Cup, is now minded to stay in Europe after his pre-season displays.

Sporting director Admar Lopes considered flying to Spain to push talks forward face to face, but the trip did not happen. The club had believed Betis would accept their offer and release the player before returning to full activity.

Deossa was the priority target this window and viewed as a rare profile. With chances fading, attention is increasingly turning to alternative options.
