Teboho Mokoena explains why he dedicated his 50 appearances with Bafana Bafana to Percy Tau!
After reaching a significant career milestone in South Africa's 3-1 friendly win over Zambia, midfielder Teboho Mokoena chose to honour a specific teammate with his achievement.
The victory, secured at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, saw goals from Oswin Appollis, Mohau Nkota, and Sphephelo Sithole. Sipho Mbule was instrumental, providing two assists and earning the Man of the Match award, while Sabobo Banda netted a late consolation goal for the visitors.
On the occasion of earning his 50th cap for Bafana Bafana, Mokoena—who was substituted at halftime—dedicated the personal landmark to fellow international Percy Tau. He explained that Tau has been a crucial mentor since his introduction to the national setup.
"I just want to give credit to Percy Tau because I think, in my first cap, he was around," Mokoena stated in a post-match interview on SABC Sport. "He was the one who told me that my time would come, but unfortunately, he is not here today. However, I have to give him his flowers for always being there for me."
Mokoena also extended his gratitude to the national team coach for the role he has played in his continued development. "I also want to thank coach Hugo Broos because I started to be a regular under his leadership. I’m very grateful, and I’m thankful for the support and for everyone who sent me messages before the game and during the week."
Coach Broos, in turn, acknowledged the midfielder's importance to the squad and his notable accomplishment. "I congratulate him, certainly. It is not everyone who earns 50 caps, and now he will have even more [in the future]. Teboho Mokoena has become one of the most important players on the South African national team."
