FC Bayern’s first real test of the preseason has left many fans deeply frustrated—though not because of the team’s performance on the field. The record champions’ paid livestream of their match against Aston Villa experienced massive technical issues. Numerous Bayern fans vented their anger on social media.

To wrap up their Asian tour, FC Bayern will face reigning Europa League champion Aston Villa in Hong Kong on Friday. Following their 2-1 victory over Jeju SK, Vincent Kompany’s team now faces its most challenging opponent yet in this summer’s preseason.

However, anyone in Germany who wanted to watch the match had only one option. Like the game against Jeju, the match against Aston Villa was streamed exclusively via the club’s own platform, FCB.TV Plus.

Shortly before kickoff, however, there was a nasty surprise: the announced livestream wasn’t working.

Bayern has to resort to a “workaround”

FC Bayern informed its fans of the difficulties immediately before the game: “Due to technical problems on site, we are currently unable to offer a live stream of FC Bayern’s Audi Football Summit match against Aston Villa. We apologize for this.”

Even at kickoff, the screen initially remained blank without the announced broadcast. It wasn’t until a few minutes into the match that the Munich-based club managed to provide a “temporary workaround.”

Apparently, the record champions resorted to using Aston Villa’s broadcast signal. One indication of this was that the match was suddenly accompanied by an English-speaking commentator. Normally, matches on FCB.TV are offered to German audiences with German commentary.

But even with the workaround, the problems weren’t completely resolved. The stream kept stuttering, and the picture quality was at times significantly reduced—far from a high-definition signal.

Particularly frustrating for fans: FCB.TV Plus is a paid service. The subscription costs 3.99 euros per month—even club members cannot generally access the content for free.

The reactions on social media were correspondingly strong. Especially on X, complaints about the technical execution were already piling up during the match.

“Big 2026, one of the world’s biggest soccer clubs, can’t even manage to live-stream a game in good quality,” wrote one angry fan.

Another user poked fun at the poor video quality: “With the quality of this livestream, I feel like I’m watching on a CRT TV.”

Another fan put it even more bluntly: “A terrible stream and a commentator in English. What a waste of money.”

Above all, the fact that fans had to pay extra for the broadcast was met with bewilderment. “The game isn’t even playing. I’m happy to pay €3.99, but then I expect it to work. I really can’t wrap my head around this,” read another reaction.

Another fan wrote sarcastically: “Respect! You pay €4 a month all year long, and then when you actually need it, it doesn’t work! Great.”

For FC Bayern, the glitch is particularly unfortunate, coming as it does during their prestigious tour of Asia. While the Munich team is demonstrating its international appeal in Hong Kong and being celebrated by numerous fans, the broadcast of the trip’s sporting highlight caused plenty of frustration among many supporters back home.
